Most multiport valves offer 6 main positions:

Filter – Normal mode; water is filtered through the sand/media and returned to the pool.

Backwash – Reverses the flow to clean the filter media by flushing debris to waste.

Rinse – Settles the filter media after backwashing; clears any remaining debris.

Waste – Bypasses the filter; water goes straight out of the system (used to lower water level or vacuum to waste).

Recirculate – Bypasses the filter; water is circulated back to the pool (for chemical mixing or troubleshooting).

Closed – Shuts off all flow (used during maintenance).
